What’s an uncoupling membrane?

An uncoupling membrane is a membrane used in tile installations to provide uncoupling benefits. When we talk about the Guru G-Flex, this membrane is a waterproof uncoupling membrane which provides both waterproofing and uncoupling benefits.

It's designed to create a protective barrier against moisture, but also also allow for slight movement between the substrate and the tile surface. This is particularly useful in areas where shifts in the building's structure or substrate may occur. If there are slight shifts or movements in the substrate due to settling or temperature changes, the uncoupling membrane absorbs and distributes the stress. This prevents these movements from being transferred to the tiles and helps to reduce the likelihood of cracked tiles and grout.

Differences between waterproofing membrane and uncoupling membrane?

Both membranes are similar, Water-Stop Guru membrane and The G-Flex uncoupling membrane prevents water from penetrating through the substrate and causing damage.

Both membranes act as a barrier that keeps moisture from reaching the underlying materials. But as a difference, the uncoupling membrane also helps to:

  • - prevent movement-related cracks
  • - isolate any existing cracks in the substrate, preventing them from transferring to the tile layer.

Compatible with critical substrates that require extra protection and uncoupling, the G-Flex uncoupling membrane is suitable for use in various environments, ideal for commercial floors.

Features of Guru waterproofing membrane:

Guru Water-stop:

  • - Meets American National Standard for Thin-Set Ceramic Tile and Dimension Stone Installations.
  • - In compliance with The Uniform Plumbing Code and The International Plumbing Code.
  • - IAPMO listed product (files 9205 and 9990).
  • - 0.3 perm rating allowing it to be installed for steam showers.
  • - 20 mills thickness membrane
  • - Use a 1/8x 1/8” notched trowel to install.

G-Flex:

  • - Made of 1/8" (3 mm) thick high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and conforms to industry standards
  • - Improves the durability of tile installations both indoors and outdoors
  • - Tested for performance using ASTM C627, the standard for evaluating ceramic tile installation systems
  • - G-Flex reaches the maximum possible rating, Extra Heavy, with 19.2”OC for plywood, OSB and concrete subfloor.
  • - Guru recommends G-FLEX bonded to substrate with modified thin-set mortar (A118.11 and ANSI A118.15) using a 1/4” x 1/4” square notched trowel.

How to use a waterproof membrane and uncoupling mat?

Waterproofing membranes and uncoupling mat are installed before tiles are placed (over the substrate before tile installation). They are applied to the walls and floor, with special attention given to seams, corners, and joints where water might penetrate.

These can be applied to various surfaces, including concrete, wood, and cement backer board. After that, the tile is then installed directly on top of the membrane.

Moreover, proper sealing seams and overlaps is crucial to ensure effectiveness of the waterproofing system. This prevents water from finding a path through any gaps or openings.
